DELTA LIGHTS

What is it?

In partnership with Deer Creek Pilot Publishing, Cary Christian Center co-hosted a banquet to honor 4 community leaders who have demonstrated a commitment to moral, creative and exemplary leadership on concerns of great interest to the Mississippi Delta region. Over 200 attendees were expected for the evening; dress is coat & tie, after 5 dress attire.

2013 Honorees included: Peter & Eleanor Boelens, Willie Bunton, Anne Culpepper, Susie Evans, Fannie Ivory, and Robert Morganfield, Sr.

2014 Honorees include: James R. Carter, Sr., Frankye McFadden, Rebecca McGee, and Merlin Richardson.

Why?

For more than 42 years, Cary Christian Center’s mission is to actively proclaim and demonstrate the gospel of Jesus Christ in order to enable the individual to reach their full potential. The vision of Cary Christian Center is to break the cycle of poverty through relationships, one person at a time.

The Lower Delta Region (geographically bound from Greenville to Vicksburg) is historically rich with individuals, organizations and businesses that have supported the spiritual, economic, political and physical improvement of citizens in the region. Often these “lights” in this region have done important work without recognition, personal gain or at considerable risk to family or reputation.

It’s important to recognize these heroes because they serve as examples of caring and personal sacrifice for individuals that should be recognized and emulated by the entire region. Important too, the Delta region must take the lead and responsibility for recognizing its heroes and the image its wants for itself in the state and nation.

Selecting our examples presents an empowered case for our children as the future generation that will claim this region as home. Finally, this public activity can be a catalyst in revitalizing local promotion and support of the Delta region. Proceeds from the Delta Lights banquet are used to underwrite scholarships for youth participants in Cary Christian summer programs.
